Technium

A game or T-shirt, a bicycle or rubbish bag: everything around us that is man-made is technology. It’s so obvious, we almost don’t see it anymore. But how does a bicycle actually gets moving? What does it take to produce T-shirts sustainably? What technological developments are hidden in your smartphone? Find out in the Technium family exhibition on the second floor of NEMO.

Highlights of the exhibition

You will find these exhibits in Technium, on Floor 2.

  • A woman turns a wheel and watches a spinning tube.

    The Factory

By operating this 8-metre high machine, you can move tennis balls along a course using inventions such as Archimedes’ screw, a spring, combination gears, a spiral lift and a merry-go-round.

  • A boy looks at a digital screen showing a T-shirt.

    De Klos

Making a T-shirt can cause harmful substances to be released into the air and water. But it doesn’t have to be that way! It can also be done without toxic substances and using fewer raw materials. How would you make a T-shirt?

  • A boy and a girl stand bent over digital screens, with a large digital display showing a bicycle on the right.

    Draw your ideal bicycle

Have you ever drawn a bicycle from memory? Did you leave anything out? Maybe the lights, the spokes or the brakes? Design your ideal bike, watch AI bring it to life and admire your creation on a big screen.

  • A boy and a girl stand bent over digital screens, with a large digital display showing a bicycle on the right.A girl stands in front of a large digital projection and points at it, to her left three people stand.

    Energy mixer

To prevent further climate change we need a mix of better energy storage and different sources of energy. Can you use the right energy sources and bring a city to life?

  • Two boys stand with their mother bent over a map, with a white tube in the background.

    Water Power

Water: we can't live without it, but we also can't live with too much of it. In Water Power you purify water into drinking water, protect the Netherlands from floods and build your own dam to generate electricity.

  • A boy and girl take a picture of themselves in a room surrounded by mirrors and beanbags shaped like rubbish bags.

    Contemplation Container

In the Netherlands, we produce an average of 35 rubbish bags of residual waste per person per year. This is incinerated to produce heat and electricity – but once that’s done, both the energy and materials are gone for good. Take a look in your container. Is this residual waste? The Contemplation Container is designed by Hotmamahot.

The Maker Space

The Maker Space is all about the human as maker and innovator. Step into the inventor’s shoes in a workshop or view extraordinary objects.

Here you can try your hand at tinkering. Explore the possibilities by experimenting with different materials and ideas... Thinking with your hands and learning by doing. As you create, you’ll uncover new concepts and clever solutions.
