Weekend of Science

On 4 and 5 October, all across the Netherlands we celebrate the Weekend of Science. You can visit NEMO Science Museum for free this weekend. Enjoy two days full of live experiments, extra workshops, and surprising demonstrations.

  • 4 October to 5 October
  • Free
  • All ages

Lots of activities

There is plenty to do at NEMO during the Weekend of Science. Build a spinning top or a chain reaction, get to work with electricity or conduct experiments in the Laboratory. There are additional Chain Reaction and Magic or Science demonstrations this weekend.

Surprising demonstrations

  • Chain Reaction

What makes an office chair roll? How can a mannequin play tennis? And how does one domino knock down the next? Welcome to the world of potential energy and kinetic energy. Discover action and reaction, cause and effect in the Chain Reaction. On Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00, every hour on the hour on floor 1.

  • Magic or Science?

What happens to a balloon in liquid nitrogen? How do you create patterns with sound? Discover how amazing science is in this spectacular demonstration with ice-cold and red-hot experiments. Saturday and Sunday at 11:30, 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 in the Auditorium on floor 2.

  • Spaceship Earth

What is a satellite and how can you use it to conduct research? In Spaceship Earth, you will discover that everything on Earth is interconnected, by using satellite data. Follow a whale from space and discover how clouds are formed. Sunday at 12:30 and 2:30 in the Studio Theatre on floor 1.

Extra workshops

  • Hands-on chemistry

In the Laboratory you become a scientist in your own right – for a little while at least! Lab coat? Check! Safety glasses? Check! Carry out surprising tests and experiments using everyday objects.

  • Build your own chain reaction

Knock over dominoes, set a seesaw in motion, launch a catapult, and ring a bell. How will you build your chain reaction?

  • Make the lamp light up

Get started with electricity and make an electrical circuit. Can you make the light bulb glow?

  • Make a spinning top

Pick a pin and build a spinning top in any shape you like. Give it a spin and see what happens! How can you make your top spin for a longer time?

  • Guess the device

Your alarm clock, toaster, telephone: you use all kinds of devices every day. Would you recognise everyday devices if they were taken apart? Test your knowledge in a quiz and guess the device!

Scientific research: Do you recall this?

Our memory is not always as reliable as we think. Everyone forgets something sometimes, but did you know that we can also “remember” things that never happened? How does that happen? During the Weekend of Science, you can participate in a large-scale study by the Open University at NEMO Science Museum. Test your memory with words and images and discover what type of memory you have.

On Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 to 5:00 in Science Live on floor 1.

Princess Máxima Centre

Our bodies consist of billions of cells. Every cell contains DNA, which is your unique genetic code. But what exactly is DNA? And what happens when an error creeps into that code, causing a group of “wrong” cells to grow? Pediatrician Mirjam Bos from the Princess Máxima Centre for Pediatric Oncology will explain more about this in an interactive children's lecture. Afterwards, you will get to work as a researcher yourself with three experiments.

On Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 and 3:00 in the Theatre on floor 2.

SoundLAB

In the SoundLAB of Muziekgebouw, you can explore all kinds of cool instruments. Which instruments sound good together? And when does sound actually become music? Play the instruments and create a whole new piece of music together.

On Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 to 5:00 in the Maker Space on floor 2.
