Weekend of Science

Visit NEMO Science Museum for free during the Weekend of Science. There is loads to discover. Build a spinning top or a chain reaction, participate in scientific research, or compose your own music.

  • 4 October to 5 October
  • Free
  • All ages

Extra workshops

  • Hands-on chemistry

Lab coat? Check! Safety glasses? Check! Carry out surprising tests and experiments using everyday objects.

  • Build your own chain reaction

Knock over dominoes, set a seesaw in motion, launch a catapult, and ring a bell.

  • Guess the device

Your alarm clock, toaster, telephone: would you recognise everyday devices if they were taken apart?

  • Make the lamp light up

Get started with electricity and make an electrical circuit. Can you make the light bulb glow?

  • Make a spinning top

Pick a pin and build a spinning top in any shape you like. Give it a spin and see what happens!

SoundLAB

In the SoundLAB of Muziekgebouw, you can explore all kinds of cool instruments. Which instruments sound good together? And when does sound actually become music? Play the instruments and create a whole new piece of music together.

On Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 to 5:00 in the Maker Space on floor 2.

What is DNA?

Our bodies consist of billions of cells. Every cell contains DNA, which is your unique genetic code. But what exactly is DNA? And what happens when an error creeps into that code, causing a group of “wrong” cells to grow? Pediatrician Mirjam Belderbos from the Princess Máxima Centre for Pediatric Oncology will explain more about this in an interactive children's lecture. Afterwards, you will get to work as a researcher yourself with three experiments.

On Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 and 3:00 in the Theatre on floor 2.

Surprising demonstrations

  • Chain Reaction

Welcome to the world of action and reaction and cause and effect.

  • Magic or Science?

A spectacular demonstration with ice-cold and red-hot experiments.

  • Spaceship Earth

Discover that everything on Earth is interconnected, by using satellite data.

Scientific research: Do you recall this?

Our memory is not always as reliable as we think. Everyone forgets something sometimes, but did you know that we can also “remember” things that never happened? Participate in a large-scale study by the Open University and discover what type of memory you have.

On Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 to 5:00 in Science Live on floor 1.

  • A unique glimpse behind the scenes

The Weekend of Science is held each year in the first weekend of October. For one weekend, museums, research institutes, laboratories, universities and businesses open their doors to the public. NEMO is responsible for organising this national event.
