What is the most game-changing invention of all time?
The wheel. Paper. Sails. Money. The telephone. Plastic. The airplane. Rope. The internet. Agriculture. The light bulb. So many discoveries and inventions have profoundly changed the world. But which one tops the list?
Endless discussions
You can read all about history. You can listen to the greatest thinkers. You can read every book on the shelf.
And still people can debate and argue endlessly about which invention tops them all. There are so many good options...
But wait a second – how does all that happen? The reading, the listening, the arguing, the debating and the learning?
Through language, of course! All those sounds, symbols and scribbles we’ve all agreed can mean much more than their shapes.
Vast cathedral
Think about it – what if we didn’t have language? How would countries create laws? How would we plan ahead? How would we pass on knowledge and share scientific discoveries? Or even read a book? We couldn’t! We wouldn’t even be able to talk. Civilisation would collapse.
Of course, this extraordinary invention wasn’t the product of a single moment or a flash of brilliance. It’s more like a vast cathedral, built stone by stone by countless individuals across generations. Language is a masterpiece we’ve all helped to shape, and it might just be the most game-changing thing we’ve ever invented.
Disagree?
If you disagree, feel free to make your case... just be sure to do so without using language. Good luck!
