Raise the water level

The more water there is, the higher the water level. Or are there other ways of raising the water level?

Get started

A boy draws a line on a bowl of water

Step 1

Put some water in the glass dish. Mark the water level on the glass with a felt-tip pen.

A pan on a stovetop

Step 2

Half fill the pan with water, put it on a stove, and heat it up. Ask an adult to help you with this.

Two boys put a glass bowl of water on top of a pan

Step 3

Put the glass dish on top of the pan with hot water. What happens?

What did you discover?

The water in the dish rose after you heated up the water. This is because water expands when it heats up. Because the earth is getting warmer, seawater is expanding, causing sea levels to rise. Look at an old-fashioned, non-digital thermometer – they work in the same way. The warmer it is, the higher the liquid in the tube rises.
