Make a mini horn

Make a mini paper horn and sound like an elephant!

Get started

Step 1

Measure a square of 5 cm by 10 cm on the piece of paper. Cut out the square.

Step 2

Fold this square in half, so that you have a square of 5 cm by 5 cm.

Step 3

Cut out two triangles along the folded edge. The triangles can be different sizes.

Step 4

On the side opposite the triangles, fold the paper on both sides into flaps of about 1 cm, pointing outwards. Your horn is ready.

Step 5

Hold the horn between your index finger and middle finger. Place your lips on the flaps and blow between the two bits of paper. Do the same holding the horn vertically (with your fingertips pointing towards your nose) and horizontally (with your index finger on your top lip and middle finger on your bottom lip).

What did you discover?

Blowing through both layers of paper causes them to flutter (vibrate). This makes air vibrations, which you hear as sound. The same thing happens when you release air out of a balloon by pinching its lip. You can control the sound (pitch and volume) by creating more or less space between your fingers.
