Rooftop square NEMO open to the public
The Netherlands’ highest rooftop square opens at NEMO Science Museum
Amsterdam, 22 mei 2025
On Thursday, 22 May, NEMO Science Museum will celebrate the official opening of its redeveloped rooftop square by the Mayor of Amsterdam Femke Halsema. The redeveloped roof, a green space in the heart of Amsterdam, is dedicated to science and technology. A place where visitors can, for example, measure wind speed or study the sun, moon and stars. A square where wonder, knowledge and inspiration take centre stage and where young and old, leading experts and open minds, scientists, technicians, inventors and creators can all come together. An open-air stage provides a stunning venue for a whole range of events, including film screenings and musical evenings. The green roof is NEMO’s gift to the city of Amsterdam as it celebrates its 750th anniversary this year. The rooftop square will be open to the public from 23 May, free of charge.
Géke Roelink, NEMO Science Museum’s managing director, reveals what lies in store for visitors: "With this innovative and multifaceted rooftop square, we offer a creative place where everyone is welcome and where meeting, connecting and understanding science and technology are key. And of course, where you can enjoy the best view in Amsterdam."
Discovering, measuring, birdwatching
At various locations on the roof, visitors can learn more about how smart ideas can help us achieve a sustainable future. The roof is designed to accommodate plants and animals in the heart of a European capital. Visitors can discover how plant life creates a healthier city. They can measure wind speed, study clouds, observe the sun and the stars, and get a closer look at the city’s birds. NEMO’s new green, sustainable roof may be an artificial landscape constructed with the latest science and technology, but it functions as a natural ecosystem at altitude, home to more than 75 different species of flowers and plants. It is a green space that enhances biodiversity and quality of life in the city. Currently, the plants are small but will soon grow into a green oasis.
NEMO Roof Festival marks 750 years of Amsterdam
As part of FutureFest from 12 until 21 June, NEMO’s rooftop square will host an exciting programme of extra special events dedicated to 750 years of Amsterdam, including a morning rave, a rooftop safari, live music, a vegan tasting session and theatre shows. Check out the full programme at nemosciencemuseum.nl/rooftopsquare.

In addition to NEMO’s own financial contribution, the redeveloped rooftop square is supported by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency’s DUMAVA sustainable real estate scheme, NEMO’s main partner VriendenLoterij and contributions from Zadelhoff Cultuurfonds, Stichting Goede Doelen Nh1816 and the Friends of NEMO.
