Nature follows a rhythm of day and night. Some animals are active mainly in daylight, others in darkness.

The rhythm of day and night determines when animals are active and look for food. Different species use the same habitat, but at different times.
For nocturnal animals, activity begins only when it gets dark. Night is a good time for animals that don’t need much light. Bats rest in dark, sheltered places during the day. Not until sunset do they fly out to search for food.

Moths also appear after dark. During the day they sit still and are hard to see. At night they go out to find food or each other. This is safer than during the day: less light means birds and other predators cannot see them as well

The time of day that nocturnal animals become active shifts with the length of the day. They start earlier in summer than in spring.
